A National Model
As an element of its comprehensive environmental management plan, NorthernStar Natural Gas has committed approximately $59 million – including $7 million before project operation – toward the Salmon Enhancement Initiative. In all, this financial commitment represents the largest private contribution to environmental health in the region’s history.
Its objective: To restore salmon in the lower Columbia estuary
Using best available science and plans, and tapping the expertise of local restoration groups, this funding will ensure that the project significantly improves fish productivity and the health of the lower Columbia ecosystem. We believe that the Initiative will also catalyze public and private monies which will further amplify its positive effects.
To ensure the success of the Salmon Enhancement Initiative, Bradwood Landing is partnering with the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. These groups will guide the implementation of the SEI and engage regional interests and include area tribes, watershed and estuary groups, and state and federal agencies.
Salmon Enhancement Initiative funding includes:
- $7 million for early actions (prior to project operation)
- $1.3 million a year for the expected 30 - 40 year life of
the project
- Additional components to reduce fish mortalities, create woody debris banks, and other measures to benefit
salmon and the ecosystem
Bradwood Landing’s annual funding will sustain these
restoration efforts for generations.
