Safety Along The Columbia
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a positive Waterway Suitability Report (WSR) as a condition of Bradwood Landing moving forward. In its report, the Coast Guard determined that, with improvements to navigation, safety and security, the Columbia River is suitable for LNG carriers.
LNG carriers will not adversely affect river traffic. The report states that LNG carriers will transit the river much like other deep draft vessels that navigate the Columbia today and will neither affect traffic over the Astoria Bridge nor interfere with cruise ships.
The Coast Guard will “routinely” allow other vessels to transit through safety/security zone and pass LNG carriers.
The Waterway Suitability Report acknowledges the outstanding safety record of LNG carriers while recommending enhancements to navigation, safety and security that Bradwood Landing endorses and has taken steps to implement.
Improvements to navigation and safety will benefit all users of the Columbia and include three new firefighting tugs that will be the largest, most powerful tugs on the river. In fact, these tugs will represent the only waterborne fire fighting capability on the river. Bradwood will pay for these enhancements to river safety and security. |
